Email App Connection Settings (IMAP and SMTP)

You can use an email app on your phone or computer alongside Arcane Mail webmail. An app needs your mailbox login and the server details assigned to your account. The webmail website address is not automatically the incoming or outgoing mail server name.

Before opening your email app

Have:

  • Your full email address and mailbox password.
  • The incoming and outgoing server names supplied for your mailbox.
  • The device and app you want to use.

Arcane Tech’s managed email service includes help connecting compatible devices. A server name may vary with the mailbox’s assigned infrastructure, so copying another client’s server name can produce a certificate or sign-in error.

Standard secure settings

Setting Enter
Account type IMAP
Incoming username Your full email address
Incoming password Your mailbox password
Incoming server The hostname supplied for your mailbox
Incoming port and security 993 with SSL/TLS
Outgoing username Your full email address
Outgoing password Your mailbox password
Outgoing server The hostname supplied for your mailbox
Outgoing port and security 465 with SSL/TLS, or 587 with STARTTLS when specified for your setup

If your app has an outgoing server requires authentication control, enable it and use the mailbox credentials. Do not choose an unencrypted option or ignore a certificate warning just to make the connection test pass.

IMAP or POP?

Choose IMAP for normal use across webmail, phone and computer. It keeps mail in server folders and synchronizes common actions. MXroute also supports POP, but POP behavior depends on how the app stores or removes downloaded mail and can make a multi-device setup confusing.

With IMAP, a delete on one device may remove the message from the server mailbox. A local folder on one computer may not sync at all. Keep independent copies of mail you are required to preserve.

Set up and test

  1. Add a new account in your email app and choose the manual setup option if the app’s automatic discovery picks an unrelated service.
  2. Enter the full address, mailbox password and the assigned server names.
  3. Set the secure incoming and outgoing ports above.
  4. Save the account and allow the app time to synchronize folders.
  5. Send a message to another address you control, reply to it and confirm both directions work.
  6. Check the same messages in webmail. If the app and webmail disagree, note which folder and device each message appears in.

App buttons and menu names vary by version. Use the app’s current vendor instructions for its exact screens; the connection values above describe your mail service.

If setup fails

Check the complete address, password and both server names. An app can receive mail correctly while sending fails because it lacks outgoing authentication.

Record the app name, version and exact error, then use the support form. Never send your mailbox password.

Screenshots for this article: capture the current app’s account screens with the mailbox address and password obscured. The webmail login image does not show the IMAP or SMTP settings.
